Photographer Andrew Slaton takes some of the most breathtaking and beautiful photographs that we have ever seen and we can’t get enough of his inspiring work. Slaton loves photographing in the Big Bend area and in our quaint little town and his pictures capture the charm and personality like none other – Intrigued and captivated with his work we caught up with Slaton to find out what inspires him and why he loves shooting in West Texas (and why he recommends the area to Brides).

Q: What inspires you?

A: The land. The relationship between land and sky. And of course how the light interacts with both. Then lastly, how people move through a landscape.

Q: What inspires you at the Gage Hotel and in Marathon?

A: How the Gage relates to it’s surroundings has always been fascinating to me. Marathon is the quintessential old-west kind of town. The land and the people are its soul, and the Gage is a magnificent piece of its history. It’s priceless.

Q: What is the best part about being a photographer?

A: I love composing with my camera! Whether it’s photographing a wedding, and capturing the once-in-a-lifetime moments of life and love, or waiting patiently for the light to paint a mountain scape. I am thankful for the reality that I get to make a living doing what I do. It also makes my brain happy… it’s the perfect union of creative and technical/ analytical.

Q: You see a lot of weddings, would you recommend Marathon and the Gage Hotel as a destination for brides? If so, why?

A: Of course! It offers a supremely relaxed atmosphere for guests, and it is as close as you can get to one of my favorite national parks, Big Bend. Brides love it because they can rent out an entire house or casita for privacy and convenience, and the spa makes it a well rounded weekend for all the bride’s ladies.

Q: What was your favorite part of working at the Gage Hotel?

A: All of the amazing details. It is astonishing the variety and craftsmanship of the artwork the Gage houses. It always keeps my attention.

Q: What is your favorite picture from the last wedding you shot at the Gage?

A: When the sun begins to fade in Big Bend country, the real magic starts! And that’s right when the ceremony ended for Emily and Stuart. They wanted to go shoot some portraits of just the two of them and incorporate the landscape. I just loved the idea! And one of the images, I felt beautifully summed up the whole day.

Q: Location, weather and light seem to be crucial to photography —  How is Marathon different from other places you have shot?

A: Marathon (and the Big Bend area) is just one of those rare places that make photographers and artists salivate. There is a quality to the light that can only be described as magical. Once you go and experience it… it truly gets in your blood. And you always have to go back. It’s invigorating and inspiring. Honestly, I can’t imagine life without this amazing part of Texas.
